  • Laying people off instead of offering to move them to the now-more-important projects has to be one of the dumbest management moves that tech companies repeatedly do. These are people already trained on all the policies and procedures and tooling and “culture” specific to your company.

It’s going to be more expensive to hire and train new people when the dumdums in upper management finally figure out the mistakes they made that got them to a point where they decided they need to cut jobs and projects, and the ramp-up time before you actually start seeing progress on those priorities is going to be seriously lengthened. Of course they won’t acknowledge it was their fault in the first place, and again the heads roll on the wrong end of the corporate ladder.

  • A question for Brits, from someone in the US who knows nothing about your history or politics: do you have an analogue for the Baby Boomer phenomenon that we have in the states, with an aging population who “got theirs” and actively works to prevent the younger generations from receiving the same opportunities they had, with similar political leanings? It seems to me like you might not since you have the NHS and other social safety nets that give me the perception that as a whole, you care more about each other, but I’m guessing it’s not that simple? I know I could just Wiki it and I will, but first I would like to hear some perspectives from people who actually live there.

  • The Arch wiki is one of the most impressive documentation resources I’ve seen and I’ve only [needed to] scrape the surface so far. Almost every minor unexpected issue I ran into along the way had a detailed solution and the only issue I haven’t been able to resolve is getting all the buttons on my mouse to work…but did find out it’s Logitech’s weird receiver codes that are the issue and they don’t release drivers for Linux.
