I don’t break very many cables myself, but I’ve certainly broken a couple of Apple cables - they seem particularly delicate.

All it takes is picking up your phone without realising it’s still on charge and getting unlucky with force/angle. That won’t destroy it but it’ll damage the interface between the cable and the plug enough that it’ll start to deteriorate and eventually come apart.

Yeah I’ve got one too. They’re certainly nicer, but the thing that worries me is while the braided cable is a little more durable they’ve taken away the strain relief.

(That said these usb-c ones look like they have strain relief, so maybe?)

I do not understand why publishers don’t cancel the keys. Why do they allow that parasitic industry to exist? Surely they know which key corresponds to a chargeback?

I strongly feel that inner city buses should be council-run and free at the point of use.

Running buses as private companies is dumb. It either means you have multiple companies competing for passengers on the same profitable routes which is inefficient, or a situation where the govt/council have to carefully divvy up routes, which takes away any incentive to do a better job, and incentivises corner-cutting as that’s the only way to increase profit.

More people using the bus is a net benefit. Improves traffic, encourages people to go to commercial areas, increases the utility of expanding routes/timetables, etc. The only possible downsides I can think of are that it may encourage bus use over cycling (though I’d argue that most people aren’t cycling because it’s cheaper, and many cyclists will use alternative transport in bad weather), and drivers will moan (but drivers moan about everything).

I don’t even particularly like taking the bus (personally I’d rather cycle or walk), but it seems like such an easy way to improve quality of life in cities.

You can trademark dictionary words.

You can’t trademark anything too generic, like you might struggle to trademark a drink called “drink” or something (although you might be able to trademark, eg, shoes called “drink”!), but there’s nothing stopping you trademarking words.

Oh, and, Adobe is an english word, too.

That’s an amusing name but they take a photoshop competitor to market using that name they’re going to lose a trademark dispute in milliseconds.

I’m in the same kinda situation as you, I need some storage but need it to be expandable, want to run some docker stuff, while I could (and have in the past) build and maintain something like that from scratch, I don’t want it to take over my life and I want it to be easy to maintain. My previous NAS was fully set up from scratch on FreeBSD, it was pretty good but was a lot of work to get it right.

So I set up an Unraid server on a parts-bin server as a kinda compromise between a fully DIY and just buying a NAS. Meant I could use some old stuff I had and some cheap components rather than paying out hundreds for a NAS. Slapped in some shucked drives and some old NVMe drives (took the opportunity to upgrade my gaming machine, so used the old stuff for this), now got 42Tb of storage and 2Tb cache.

I have to say it’s bloody fantastic. Was a bit on the fence about a paid OS but it’s cheap, the UI is solid, and thus far totally worth the money.

Alongside about a dozen services running in containers, I’ve got an Arch VM to satiate my DIY cravings, which suits me fine because I can do what I want with that without messing up my file storage/services/etc.

100% agree. I still have a 40” 1080p dumb tv because I can’t find one that I trust to not do something annoying/invasive.

I nearly bought the same one my friend has (Samsung something) as it seemed pretty inoffensive, until he told me it had started showing ads on the menu screens a few months after he bought it.

Yeah it’s definitely got worse.

But leave it on medium heat. Eventually the water will boil off, the fat will render and it’ll start to fry, then you’ll be able to brown it. Can take a while.

The sound will change a bit to a crackling/frying sound when it’s got to that point.

What do they do?

There’s so much bindweed and ivy coming from the neighbour’s gardens choking everything, and it’s just about as much as I can manage just to keep that under control so it’s a bit of a mess atm.

However I’ve kept a little patch in the middle of the garden unmowed (for the bees) and that’s got all sorts growing in it now and looks pretty nice.

A good quality usenet server.
