I have been using Proxmox with a couple thousand VM’s and have been very happy with it.
I had a friend that ran theirs though the air conditioning ducts. For mine though I ran them in the corners and under area rugs.
Maybe you could do port knocking to have the firewall open the port to that IP after you hit a series of ports in the proper sequence.
