My computer doesn’t support Win11, so I have that going for me. Transitioning to the Steam Deck for my gaming, which has been a slow but mostly positive process. Some of the games don’t play well outside of Windows, but none of the ones I really want to play, and I can always switch to my computer if I do.

It’s true you will never get rid of all of it but, just like crime, basic enforcement is a deterrence. They know who’s buying, they know where they’re shipped, they have a fair idea if they’re returned. Just requiring reviews to be from purchasers after they’ve received the product, removing positive reviews for returns without replacement (or flagging them as returned), and a few other steps would make fake reviews either very expensive or very expensive for the results.

The fact is, Amazon makes most of their money on AWS, and I don’t think they care to put in the real effort to make their marketplace trustworthy again. Without that, it will continue its downward spiral.

Won’t keep fake reviews off their platform. It’s not a matter of ability, but of will.

It’s sort of a flawed opinion. If you’re never charging at home and doing a lot of driving, a hybrid won’t make much difference and might cost more. If you’re conscientious about charging when you can and mostly drive within range of your battery’s capacity, it can be almost as effective as full electric. Stats indicate most PHEV owners use the the same way you would use an ICE, car, which is more expensive and a bit of a waste.

Even the RPi, which has major Linux support has a blob for its graphics driver (at least the last time I checked). And I wouldn’t exactly say Broadcom is falling over themselves to support Linux. Qualcomm, less so.

Yeah, they had a drive train, and no real path forward. Even with piles of cash, it took years to get something that resembled a finished product.

Here’s your proposal in a nutshell. “Can we have the rich and powerful impose laws on the rich and powerful to reduce the benefits that will have for their children?” And even if we could do that, you completely ignore the option of them just hiring tutors to train their kids (which is already done by some).

Not saying your goals are bad, perhaps a little misguided, and rely on the people that would be negatively impacted (by their perception) to make it happen.

There is nothing in 11 that I want that isn’t already in 10, and what I need from Windows vs. Linux is approaching zero.

I got a message on my computer, Win10, saying my computer wasn’t capable of being upgraded to Win11, but it would be protected by updates until October? 2025. Nice of them to give me a reminder to switch to Linux.

People have been sending NSFW pictures one way or another probably since people started making pictures. We have images scratched into the walls in Pompeii. There are certainly issues of consent, abuse, and advertising that need to be addressed, but demonizing pictures of naked people is also a problem.

As for all those alternatives you mention, the vast majority of fediverse applications/instances seem to be "like [insert commercial entity], but hosted by individuals/the community? How many people would be on Lemmy if Reddit was offering them what they wanted? When you have control or alternatives the odds of finding what you like improve. And some of those things people will want to share will be images, videos, and yes, even porn. But even without porn, if the service isn’t meeting people’s needs, which I agree includes no or fewer ads, then it simply won’t survive.

Something tells me there would be agreements between the instance provider and a media hosting provider and as such the media hosting provider would probably have some disclaimers about what they’re willing to host (war porn, regular porn, what have you). The two host providers would have to make sure everything they want to provide and everything they don’t want to host agree. I mean, there’s already lemmynsfw, so free porn hosting is already happening.

I honestly think the whole media hosting aspect of federation is dangerously flawed as long as instance hosts are still paying for storage and bandwidth, and I’m not sure how to fix it. It will cripple small instances with popular media if they host directly, but not hosting directly has a possibly lesser impact on all instance providers, with a higher aggregate impact. Tough choice. I don’t know enough about CDNs to say if that can solve the problem, depending on how media is federated.

This is going to need to be resolved if federation is going to grow to the next level. I hope someone finds an answer that works well enough for everybody, even the porn users and providers.

I would say it’s calloused not to. Moreover, estimates put PTSD rates in America at about 6%. That doesn’t sound tiny to me, and that’s not even traumatized people. That’s people so traumatized they can’t handle it in a typical manner and will probably need help to recover, not your run-of-the-mill trauma that we all deal with and move on. Note that even those without PTSD don’t need an extra helping of reality courtesy of random strangers on the internet while they’re dealing with their trauma.

Like most healing processes, recovering from trauma takes time. It’s not reasonable to expect that everyone will be recovered from their trauma at any given time. And a society that won’t give people time to heal before dealing with more of the shit they’ve been through is more than a little flawed. Hell, some people deal with their trauma by rejecting empathy rather than acknowledge that they’ve been hurt. I know I did that for decades.

If only past trauma was so easy to deal with. Perhaps a little consideration for others in a social space isn’t too much to ask.

So, is that a right away thing, or does that mean 2 or 3 weeks from now?

I’d say each book ends on a slightly happier note, but I would never call them light-hearted. The humor tends to the grim, and the outcomes are never wonderful.

Not even just waiting to charge. Picking someone up, but your schedule gets you there 15 minutes before they’re available? Why not put that computer to use?

Where I live, the base model of the Chevy Bolt is $41k, and doesn’t have heat pump climate control (or isn’t talking about it). It also doesn’t look like it would seat 5 comfortably. Now, even without the spectre of financially supporting Elon’s antics, I don’t see a lot of reason to pay another $10k for a reasonably similar car. People are weird. 🤷‍♂️
