Super not easy to take apart and not easy to repair.

But honestly that’s expected for something this complex. There’s a lot of tech in that thing.

Yeh, apart from the gluing around the front screen layers (that lenticular stuff is interesting), the inards are full of screws and connectors - not much glue thankfully, just very fiddly

There are 3 layers in front of the eyes display, which makes the whole thing extra heavy and is right in the uncanny valley. A lot of lightning looking connectors you can remove with the SIM tool. It’s fragile and not easy to repair.

and is right in the uncanny valley

I know what the uncanny valley is - I don’t see how weight is really relevant to that, what did you mean?

This is probably the three layers (three are physical, the rest are digital processing steps):

The “generate faces” step is well in the uncanny valley territory. There’s not enough light inside the headset to do passthrough video so instead they have a very primitive avatar which is recognisably you but definitely doesn’t look like you.

Personally I don’t think any of them contribute significantly to the weight of the headset. Probably less than 1% of the weight.

They added a bunch of weight for the device to add an effect that feels very uncanny.

Yes from what I’ve seen the animation isn’t great and it feels super weird when it’s on someone’s actual face. Even worse to me than the FaceTime avatar thing

It’s hard to repair. So pay for the extended warranty.

Out of warranty repairs will often just require buying a whole new headset.
